Alcohol Beverage Retail Licenses are valid for 1 year, from July 1 – June 30. There are two types of Alcohol Beverage Retail Licenses:

• Class A – Retail sales to consumers for off-premise consumption only (liquor store)
• Class B – Retail sales to consumers for on-premise consumption (restaurant or bar)

Applications can be found at the Wisconsin Department of Revenue website. There are several steps to this process and all questions should be directed to the Village Clerk.

All Alcohol Beverage Retail Licenses are approved by the Village Board.

Amusement Device Licenses are valid for 1 year, from July 1 – June 30. If you have 15 or more machines, you must also apply for an arcade license and submit an application to the Plan Commission for a conditional use permit and pay the required fee.

Please see Chapter 4 of the Village Municipal Code for more information or contact the Village Clerk. Applicants will need to complete an Amusement Device Application and submit it to the Village Clerk for approval by the Village Board.

This license is valid for Sussex residents only and are non-expiring.

Bike owners will need to submit a completed Bicycle License Application and payment of $10 to the Sussex Civic Center in-person, by mail, dropped in our night deposit which is located in the vestibule located on the north side of the building or online. Bicycle licenses are processed during business hours, Monday - Friday and mailed within 5 business days. Walk-ins are always welcome.

Bicycle Safety Tips

• Ride a bicycle that fits you.
• Do a safety inspection of the brakes, tires and pedals.
• Wear a helmet and good shoes that are tied.
• Ride with a friend on a familiar route, on the right side of the road.
• Obey all traffic rules.
• Walk your bicycle across busy intersections.
• Use hand signals to let traffic know where you intend to go.

Cigarette Licenses are valid for one year, from July 1–June 30. Applicants must submit a completed application and payment to the Village via the mail or placed in our night deposit which is located on the north side of the Civic Center building inside the vestibule.

Applications can be found at the Wisconsin Department of Revenue website. Please contact the Village Clerk for more information.

All fees are collected after the license has been approved by Village Board.

No license for a public dance shall be issued until the business complies with and conforms to all ordinances, health and fire regulations of the Village and of the State, is properly ventilated, supplied with sufficient toilet conveniences and is a safe and proper place for the purpose for which it is used.

Dance Licenses are valid for 1 year, from July 1 – June 30.

Types of Dance Licenses:

• Class A (Public Dance - Admission Fee, Advertised event or Live Musicians)
• Class B (Incidental Dancing - no Admission Fee, No Advertised Event and No Live Musicians)
• Class C (Non-Profit, Fraternal, Church or School Organization)
• Special Permit (Granted for One Public Dance)

2025 licenses will be issued after January 1, 2025. 

Sussex Dog Licenses are valid for one (1) calendar year and are due by March 31. After March 31, a late fee is $5 is added to each license. Late fee exceptions are residents who move into Sussex after March 31 or welcome a new dog after March 31.

Fees are listed on the application.

Payment and proof of rabies vaccination must accompany the completed license Dog License Application before a dog license can be issued. These documents can be mailed to the Sussex Civic Center, placed in our night deposit which is located in the vestibule on the north side of the building or apply online.

Dog licenses are processed during business hours, Monday-Friday and mailed within five (5) business days.

Hauler Permits are valid for one (1)  year, from January 1–December 31. Fees are listed on the application.

Payment, certificate of liability insurance, copy of operator-in-charge Grade 2 certification, copy of operator Grade 1 certifications and a copy of your State of WI permit showing your SY# must accompany the application. These documents can be mailed to the Sussex Civic Center or placed in our night deposit which is located in the vestibule on the north side of the building. Hydrant Permits are valid for one (1) year, from January 1–December 31. Fees are listed on the application. Hydrant hook-up is at the WWTF located at N59W23551 Clover Drive and the hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Applicants need to submit a completed Hydrant Permit Application to the Sussex Civic Center by mail, placed in our night deposit which is located in the vestibule on the north side of the building or online. Mobile Food Vendor Licenses are valid from April 1 through November 30 unless the Village Board approves alternative dates. The hours of operation are Monday – Sunday between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. 

Vendors are allowed on the streets of Miller Way, Village Drive, Sussex Road, North Corporate Circle, South Corporate Circle, Executive Drive (between North Corporate Cir. and South Corporate Cir.), on private property with written permission and as allowed by the Park and Recreation Department for the Farmers Market and Special Events.

Fees and requirements are listed on the application. First time applicants will need to submit a completed application, payment and supporting documents to the Village Clerk's office for approval by the Village Board. Renewals are approved by the Village Administrator. For more information please contact the Clerk's office.

Operator Licenses are valid for two (2) years. There are three types of Licenses: Regular, Temporary and Provisional. Please see the application for details and fees.

Applicants must submit:

• Copy of a valid State ID;
• Proof of completion of a responsible server training course within the last two years or proof that applicant has held an Operator's license in another municipality within the last two years;
• Payment

Temporary Operator (Bartender) License Application (PDF) - Note: This license is for persons employed by or donating their services to nonprofit corporations. A person is limited to only one such license per calendar year.

Outdoor Establishment/Outdoor Merchandise Display & Sales Permits are valid for 1 season, from April 1 – November 30. Fees and requirements are listed on the application. First time applicants will need to submit a completed Outdoor Establishment Application, payment and design plan to the Village Clerk's office for approval by the Village Board. If you have a Short-Term rental, you are required to file a monthly report-form that is due and payable by the twentieth day of the succeeding month.  (Example: January payment is due by February 20th, etc.)
